Completed piling at 1 Wood Street

Leading Geotechnical specialist Bachy Soletanche has just completed the piling work at 1 Wood Street, Cheapside, London. The piling work will form a foundation for a new office block development for Land Securities being managed by Bovis Lend Lease.

Work began on site at Wood Street on 20 November 2005 and was completed at the end of January 2006. The piling contract is worth £700,000, involving the construction of 140 rotary bored large diameter auger (LDA) piles, ranging from 750mm to 1050mm in diameter, and up to 43m in depth.

Barry Osborn, Contracts Manager at Bachy Soletanche commented:
“The compact site meant that it was very tight to work two piling rigs productively and careful co-ordination was required between the Bachy Soletanche site team, the main contractor Bovis LendLease and the consulting engineer, Waterman.”

“Aside from these difficulties caused by limited mobility on the site, there have also been a large number of obstructions as work has progressed. Existing piles from previous developments on the site have needed to be cored out using our heavy-duty hydraulic rigs.” He added.
