Despite battling against the unforgiving Scottish weather, Bachy Soletanche has started piling at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) in Glasgow in preparation for a new Multi-Storey Car Park. Known to be a potentially problematic site due to the positioning over a former dock that was filled in with unknown matter during the 1950s, main contractor SCC, Design Build Contractor, has employed the piling and ground-engineering specialists to install the piles during the seven week £750k contract.

With the continuing global financial difficulties and constraints on government spending there has been and will continue to be a gradual reduction in road schemes over the coming years. However this has been matched by a welcome increase in rail and light rail projects. We are also seeing a geographical change in workload towards the South. With the continuing drive for further savings on both road and rail schemes, better delivery could be achieved through Early Contractor Involvement being extended to specialist contractors.

Vibro Projects and Menard have joined forces with the formation of a new company, VibroMenard, which will target major ground improvement work in the UK. Its first project is the year long scheme, which sees Vibro compaction ground improvement works being carried out on the dredged granular fill at London Gateway Port in Essex, deposited by Laing O’Rourke / Dredging International JV in the Thames Estuary.
