As part of a world leading geotechnical contracting group, Bachy Soletanche Ltd specialises in all aspects of modern Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering, including bored and displacement piling, diaphragm walls, grouting, mini piling, anchors, ground improvements and environmental engineering. We have a fantastic opportunity to join our High Speed 2 Joint Venture construction project, based in Birmingham, as a Computer Aided Design (CAD) Technician.

About The Project

The HS2, N1/ N2 project covers the northern 90km section of Phase 1 of the overall HS2 scheme to provide a new high-speed rail connection between London and the North of England.

A joint venture incorporating Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering (BBGE) and Bachy Soletanche Ltd (BSL) were appointed by BBV, (Balfour Beatty/ Vinci JV), to deliver the geotechnical works required along the approximately 90km of route from Leamington Spa to Lichfield.

The works comprises extensive geotechnical works including:

  • Circa. 9km of Diaphragm Walls at 9 individual structures.
  • 28No.  Secant/ contiguous structures totalling 150,000 lin. m of piling
  • Plunge Columns, Tension Piles, Ground Anchors, Soil Nails and Ground Improvement
  • 103No. Piled bridges & viaducts.

Programme is for commencement of construction works in August 2020, with a duration of circa 4 years to complete. This is a key infrastructure project and with circa £100m of spend per annum the geotechnical works is a significant element of the works for the project.

Main Purpose

The CAD Technician is responsible for producing CAD models and drawings to project standards within ProjectWise.

Key Tasks

As a CAD Technician, key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Produce all 2D and 3D design information required for any type of structure, using AutoCAD.
  • Prepare RC and steelwork details as required.
  • Maintain an overview of developments in CAD/BIM technologies, relevant CAD/BIM standards and Codes of Practice.
  • Comply with the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and increase own awareness of Health and Safety procedures.
  • Awareness and understanding of the JV’s core Vision and Values.
  • Supported by the Project BIM manager, create new CAD documents in ProjectWise and push those documents through the project workflow.
  • Support the CAD team with training, and the development of junior CAD technicians.
  • Work under limited supervision performing complex technical work.

Reports to: BIM Manager & Technical Manager

Knowledge and Experience

To deliver the role’s responsibilities, the ideal candidate must have the following;

  • Ability to work within a ProjectWise Common Data Environment experience is desirable, but training can be provided on this.
    • RC Detailing experience preferred.
    • Steelwork Detaling experience preferred.
  • Experience in rail design essential
  • Tunnelling or similar civil structures background essential
  • AutoCAD knowledge 2d & 3d essential

The ideal candidate may have the following knowledge-

  • Microstation and/or Aecosim knowledge desirable
  • Ideally working towards EngTech or equivalent

Physical Working Environment

The role is based at the HS2 N1/N2 site in Birmingham, West Midlands.
