As part of a world leading geotechnical contracting group, Bachy Soletanche Ltd specialises in all aspects of modern Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering, including bored and displacement piling, diaphragm walls, grouting, mini piling, anchors, ground improvements and environmental engineering. We have a fantastic opportunity to join our High Speed 2 Joint Venture construction project, based in Birmingham, as a Document Controller.

About The Project

The HS2, N1/ N2 project covers the northern 90km section of Phase 1 of the overall HS2 scheme to provide a new high-speed rail connection between London and the North of England.

A joint venture incorporating Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering (BBGE) and Bachy Soletanche Ltd (BSL) were appointed by BBV, (Balfour Beatty/ Vinci JV), to deliver the geotechnical works required along the approximately 90km of route from Leamington Spa to Lichfield.

The works comprises extensive geotechnical works including:

  • Circa. 9km of Diaphragm Walls at 9 individual structures.
  • 28No.  Secant/ contiguous structures totalling 150,000 lin. m of piling
  • Plunge Columns, Tension Piles, Ground Anchors, Soil Nails and Ground Improvement
  • 103No. Piled bridges & viaducts.

Programme is for commencement of construction works in August 2020, with a duration of circa 4 years to complete. This is a key infrastructure project and with circa £100m of spend per annum the geotechnical works is a significant element of the works for the project.

Main Purpose

The Document Controller is responsible for managing the requirements for document control for the Balfour Beatty Bachy Soletanche Joint Venture working for HS2 throughout the duration of the contract. They are to ensure accurate registration, storage of drawings, documentation and specifications and accurate liaison with site and project-based staff or customer procurement and external suppliers, as appropriate.

Key Tasks

As a Document Controller, key responsibilities include:

  • Manage the requirements for document control for the Balfour Beatty Bachy Soletanche Joint Venture working for HS2 throughout the duration of the contract to ensure implementation and compliance to standards established within the Balfour Beatty Business Management System (BMS)
  • Identify and apply contractual requirements in relation to Document control
  • Work proactively with project managers and teams to ensure a deliverables forecast is prepared and adhered to .
  • Ensure accurate control of documentation from design, preconstruction/ construction through to completion and archiving
  • Liaise with project or bid teams to ensure they have a full understanding of document control and system procedures and provide training and instruction as required such that documentation control requirements are met
  • Ensure that procedures are fully implemented in order to meet requirements of the BMS and other documentation and information systems, e.g. Business collaborator
  • Manage business archiving such that all documentation is stored efficiently and can be accessed and referenced at all times
  • Work to continuously improve and enhance procedures and systems utilised for document control.
  • Provide feedback such that project managers are fully aware of all documentation issues
    Understand and carry out the role specific requirements of the Business Management System and help to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm

Reports to: Senior Document Controller/Quality Manager

Knowledge and Experience

To deliver the role’s responsibilities, the following qualities/ experience are essential:

  • Existing working experience of Business Collaborator EDMS and Sharepoint Applications
  • A good understanding of IT
  • An ability to understand how the operations of the Team relate to others and work collaboratively to obtain the best outcome for the business
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Determination to see tasks through to completion, with excellent planning and organisation skills
  • Driving Licence

The following qualities/ experience are desirable:

  • Good experience of document control gained within the construction sector
  • Experience of co-ordinating the work of others
