As part of a world leading geotechnical contracting group, Bachy Soletanche Ltd specialises in all aspects of modern Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering, including bored and displacement piling, diaphragm walls, grouting, mini piling, anchors, ground improvements and environmental engineering. We have a fantastic opportunity to join our High Speed 2 Joint Venture construction project, based in Birmingham, as a Planner.

About The Project

The HS2, N1/ N2 project covers the northern 90km section of Phase 1 of the overall HS2 scheme to provide a new high-speed rail connection between London and the North of England.

SB3 are a joint venture incorporating Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering (BBGE) and Bachy Soletanche Ltd (BSL), and are appointed by BBV, (Balfour Beatty/ Vinci JV), to deliver the geotechnical works required along the approximately 90km of route from Leamington Spa to Lichfield.

The works comprises extensive geotechnical works including:

  • Circa. 9km of Diaphragm Walls at 9 individual structures.
  • 28No.  Secant/ contiguous structures totalling 150,000 lin. m of piling
  • Plunge Columns, Tension Piles, Ground Anchors, Soil Nails and Ground Improvement
  • 103No. Piled bridges & viaducts.

Programme is for commencement of construction works in August 2020, with a duration of circa 4 years to complete. This is a key infrastructure project and with circa £100m of spend per annum the geotechnical works is a significant element of the works for the project.

Main Purpose

Under supervision of the Senior Operations Planner the Planner is responsible for implementing the requirements of the project planning procedures, ensuring compliance with the business management system. The role includes the establishment and maintenance of positive and effective relationships with customers and project team members.

Key Tasks

The Planner role undertakes a full range of duties, including:

  • Responsible to the Senior Operations Planner for the range of activities involved in the project planning life cycle, which includes:
    • Ensuring that the programme content is functionally compliant with the planning procedures and guidance.
    • Identifying planning scope, major constraints and contract requirements
    • Identifying major quantities and factors affecting the programme
    • Establishing and agreeing with Operations construction outputs and agree working hours with appropriate Estimator
    • Establishing and agreeing with Operations and Bid Team key methods of construction, sequencing, installation and commissioning
    • Producing and documenting the planning deliverables including programmes, planning philosophy, presentations and reports.
    • Producing the Tender Programme and supporting information in accordance with the tender requirements
    • Developing overall programmes, issuing to all parties for review and implementing recommendations, innovation and best practice as applicable
    • Reconciling company and sub-contract plant/labour and major materials elements in conjunction where appropriate Applying resource levelling techniques as necessary
    • Interfacing with third parties to identify and resolve issues
  • In addition to the above, at contract stage the Planner is accountable to the Planning/Project Lead for:
    • Ensuring that the Contract Programme is produced, managed and maintained in accordance with the planning procedures.
    • The overall planning strategy and the timing & sequence of the Contract Programme activities
    • The issue and communication of the Contract Programme to the Project Lead for onward issue to Client and Project Team
    • Ensuring that all other project planning and programming necessary for the execution of the contract is properly undertaken.
  • Provide support, as required to the BIM Co-ordinators to meet the project requirements or tender submission deliverables
  • Set up appropriate lean visual programme to assist the Project Team to timely deliver projects and improve productivity, performance and safety of projects

Reports to: Senior Operations Planner

Knowledge and Experience

The ideal candidate must have a self-driven attitude and show the ability to use his/her/their initiative for everyday tasks and be able to work well under pressure.

  • Operational experience (i.e. site engineer/site agent) together with previous significant experience of planning services in small to medium sized projects within the construction and engineering industry
  • Proficiency in the use of planning techniques and the required planning toolsets g. Project, Primavera 6
  • An understanding of various forms of tender documents, contract documents and specifications.
  • An understanding of various methods of planning, programming and progress monitoring.
  • An understanding of risk and opportunity management with particular reference to planning programming.
  • An understanding of the events that initiate, and of the methods used to demonstrate, delay or change entitlement.
  • An understanding of various forms of tender documents, contract documents and specifications.
  • An understanding of various methods of planning, programming and progress monitoring.
  • Good understanding of risk and opportunity management with particular reference to planning/programming.
  • An understanding of the events that initiate, and of the methods used to demonstrate, compensation event entitlement.
  • An understanding of the construction market, methods of construction, plant, equipment and labour requirements.
  • Relevant CSCS Card

*An OND/HND in a relevant subject is desirable.

Physical Working Environment

The role is based in Birmingham and will involve office-based tasks and also interaction and meetings out on our construction sites, and with 3rd parties to deliver the Planner’s range of responsibilities.
