Bachy Soletanche awarded contract for East works package of Thames Tideway Tunnel in London

Bachy Soletanche, in a joint venture with VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Costain has been awarded the contract for the East works package of the Thames Tideway Tunnel.

The contract, worth £605m, will see the construction of a section of the main tunnel (5.5km long, 7.2m dia.) and a connection tunnel (4.6km long, 5.0m dia.) at depths of between 45m and 65m below the ground. In addition to this, the team will construct five access shafts using diaphragm walls to a depth of 72m. During the project a range of specialist geotechnical techniques will be implemented including secant piling, permeation grouting, jet grouting and soil mixing ground treatment.

The East works package is one of three making up the Thames Tideway Tunnel, where a total of 25km of tunnels will be constructed beneath the streets of London. The Thames Tideway Tunnel is urgently needed to help tackle the issue of discharges of untreated sewage into the tidal River Thames and ensure that London’s sewerage system is fit for the 22nd century. The works are due to commence next month and are scheduled for delivery in 2023.

Philip Hines, Group Managing Director, commented: “We are really pleased to have been awarded the East works package for the Thames Tideway Tunnel. Working with our partners, VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Costain, we have the technical expertise and capabilities required to deliver this world class project.”
