Bachy Soletanche has been awarded a £5.6m contract by Costain, to deliver geotechnical works on the Preston Western Distributor Road.

Scheduled to open early in 2023, the £200m road scheme is the biggest new road programme in the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal.  The Preston Western Distributor will link the A583 and the M55 motorway and will involve the construction of a new motorway junction, four new bridges and two viaducts.

During a ten-month period, Bachy Soletanche will construct foundations for four different elements; Lea Viaduct, Savick Brook Viaduct, Becconsall Bridge, and various gantries.  The scheme will require approximately 260 rotary bored bearing piles, with diameters between 900mm and 1500mm, along with 150 CFA bearing piles with a diameter of 750mm.

Commenting on the award, Chris Merridew, Bachy Soletanche Managing Director, said:

“We have a strong relationship with Costain and our history of successfully delivering infrastructure projects has been recognised with the award of this contract.  The team adopted a collaborative approach with both the client and engineer to develop the optimum solution, providing particular assistance with regards to different solutions, including the low headroom operations.”
