As part of a world leading geotechnical contracting group, Bachy Soletanche Ltd specialises in all aspects of Geotechnics and Foundation Engineering, including bored and displacement piling, diaphragm walls, grouting, mini piling, anchors, ground improvements and environmental engineering. We have a fantastic opportunity to join our Major Projects team as a Site Supervisor on our HS2 Area North, West Midlands sites.

About The Project

The HS2, N1/ N2 project covers the northern 90km section of Phase 1 of the overall HS2 scheme to provide a new high-speed rail connection between London and the North of England. SB3 are a joint venture incorporating Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering (BBGE) and Bachy Soletanche Ltd (BSL), and are appointed by BBV, (Balfour Beatty/ Vinci JV), to deliver the geotechnical works required along the approximately 90km of route from Leamington Spa to Litchfield.

The works comprises extensive geotechnical works including:

  • Circa. 9km of Diaphragm Walls at 9 individual structures.
  • 28No. Secant/ contiguous structures totalling 150,000 lin. m of piling
  • Plunge Columns, Tension Piles, Ground Anchors, Soil Nails and Ground Improvement
  • 103No. Piled bridges & viaducts.

Programme is for commencement of construction works in October 2020, with a duration of circa 4 years to complete. This is a key infrastructure project and with circa £100m of spend per annum the geotechnical works is a significant element of the works for the project.

Main Purpose Of The Site Supervisor

Taking the lead of all site activities and to be the first point of contact for weekly site based staff

Reports to: Construction Manager

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure all staff understand and follow the Golden Rules at all times and to stop anyone on site if these rules are not adhered to
  • To ensure the works are carried out in the most efficient and safe manner
  • Demonstrate positive attitude and behaviour towards safety
  • Report all near misses, hazards or observations via the hotline and to the Construction Manager
  • Follow company/manufacturers procedures to ensure standards are met
  • Notify the Site Supervisor of any matters that affect the progress of works (including breakdowns & damages, etc.)
  • Ensure daily maintenance checks are carried out, reports are correctly completed on time and submitted by the each team member
  • Complete and check all relevant paperwork correctly and in a timely manner, raising any issues to the Construction Manager
  • Manage other site staff and ensure they are working in line to required standards
  • Able to manage procedure compliance
  • Being involved in Daily Briefings/Toolbox Talks
  • Be flexible on working hours as and when the contract requires
  • Willingness to help others within the team (especially when the rig is stood)
  • Be able to contribute good ideas for business improvement
  • Willingness to teach others when needed
  • Constant collaboration with other team members
  • Collaboration with other Supervisors to ensure consistent standards are met
  • To read and work to schedules, drawings and programmes, and can advise on preparation of these documents
  • Review & update site documentation to ensure it stays relevant (e.g. Works package plan & Risk Assessment)
  • Write practical and usable procedures as needed
  • Have day-to-day management responsibilities of weekly site resource and report any issues to the Construction Manager and Site Resource Manager. To include absence management of staff and to raise concerns when triggers points have been reached
  • Deliver Daily Briefings/Toolbox Talks in accordance to guidance and ensure messages are understood by site staff.
  • Able to communicate clearly to a range of people delivering Dabs, Presentations and information to the appropriate audience
  • Utilise problem solving skills to resolve issues that arise on site
  • Able to monitor and control HSEQ standards
  • Taking control of the project
  • Be aware and manage costs and site resource
  • Be able to spot emerging talent within the team
  • Make suggestions for the development of others and support team as needed
  • Manage site works within contracted hours, ensuring all staff keep to timescales set.
  • Able to plan works and work unsupervised
  • To assist in the improvement and updating of procedure and task briefings
  • Good working relations with the Construction Manager
  • Ensure to get the best out of the staff by putting the right people in the right jobs to make sure the site runs to optimum efficiency

Personal Qualities and Experience Required

  • Knowledge of site method statements, procedures, risk assessments and site specific rules (including lift plans)
  • Knowledge of piling techniques in rotary discipline
  • Site experience
  • Good communication skills (to all levels including Supervisors)
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Proactively challenge and be challenged where appropriate
  • Slinger/Signaller CPCS card
  • HSE CSCS card
  • Relevant manufacture/supplier training where required
  • Maintenance training
  • Good knowledge of more than one Rotary discipline
  • First Aid
  • SMSTS
  • Crane Lift  Supervisor ( CPCS)
  • NVQ Level 3 (Specialist Operations Piling)
  • CSCS Occupational Works Supervisor -Level 3 NVQ – Gold card ( CSCS) Or Civil Engineering Supervisor – Gold Card (CSCS)
