Despite battling against the unforgiving Scottish weather, Bachy Soletanche has started piling at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) in Glasgow in preparation for a new Multi-Storey Car Park. Known to be a potentially problematic site due to the positioning over a former dock that was filled in with unknown matter during the 1950s, main contractor SCC, Design Build Contractor, has employed the piling and ground-engineering specialists to install the piles during the seven week £750k contract.

Specialist geotechnical contractor, Bachy Soletanche, has finished work on the third phase of its piling contract in Reading, for BAM Nuttall working on behalf of Network Rail. Working to widen the railway line and construct three bridges to deliver rail track improvements for Reading Station, the developments at the heart of the huge commuter area will help it cope with the increasing passenger volumes.

With the continuing global financial difficulties and constraints on government spending there has been and will continue to be a gradual reduction in road schemes over the coming years.  However this has been matched by a welcome increase in rail and light rail projects.  We are also seeing a geographical change in workload towards the South.  With the continuing drive for further savings on both road and rail schemes, better delivery could be achieved through Early Contractor Involvement being extended to specialist contractors.
